Common Electrical Problems in Your House

Electrical Problems

Look at these common electrical problems around your home and how you can fix them yourself or in need of professional help.

Electrical Problems That You Can Fix By Yourself

Wobbly Outlet Plug

First, you need outlet shims, a wire tester, and a screwdriver. To start fixing your loose outlet, turn off the breaker, then check for voltage using a voltmeter or wire tester. Unscrew the plate and add outlet shims until the outlet is flushed perfectly in the wall.

Broken Light Switch

All you will need are a Phillips-head screwdriver, flathead screwdriver, voltage tester, and needle-nosed pliers. Turn off the circuit breaker at your electrical service box. Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the faceplate and a Phillips-head to remove the switch. Test the two connecting wires for electricity, and if it’s safe, disconnect and put the light switch again.

Simple Short Circuit

A short circuit is a problem in an electrical circuit where two or more wires that should not be in contact with one another touch. First, reset the breaker, then if repeated occurrences with an appliance indicate your appliance is faulty. However, if there is no appliance, you probably have a short in the wiring or receptacle and need to be addressed by a professional right away.

Cut or Damaged Extension Cord

If there is a cut in your extension cord or power tool cord, you can save more money by repairing it than replacing them. To get started, unplug both ends, cut off the old plug, and gently peel back the insulation jacket. Strip each wire with a wire stripper, twisting each wire at the end.
